Tozawa shrine
Ancestors of the Tozawa family from Tozawa Hidanokami Hiramori (the first Shinjo domain clan lord) to Tozawa Kyonosuke Masamori (the 11th Tozawa Masazane) are enshrined here.
A military banner with the imperial chrysanthemum crest is preserved as a treasured relic from the Boshin War. Only two of these flags remain and the other one is now kept at the Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo. The Tozawa shrine was established on the castle site in October 1893 by raising donations. The main shrine was built on October 10th, 1897. It is recorded that a grand festival was held two weeks afterwards, on October 24th.

Kappo (Japanese–style restaurant) Tsutaya
Kappo Tsutaya is a Japanese style restaurant has been in business since 1891. Cuisine for Japanese-style banquets with local ingredients and speciality eel dishes are served. You will appreciate seasonal feasts in this traditional restaurant.
Izumita Taro
Taro has been grown around Izumita since the Edo period. Eventually, “Izumita taro,” a taro low in bitterness and astringency, was developed. It has gained an excellent reputation since, for the past fifteen years, it has been grown with reduced agrochemicals and fertilizers. As a result, the taro has the desired soft, flaky and gooey texture, and no one can deny its taste and flavor. “Haitto,” a shochu liquor distilled from the Izumita taro root, tastes sweet and smooth.
Saigoya
Saigoya is a soba shop established 80 years ago in the Mukaimachi shopping arcade. A new menu, homemade noodles with horsemeat braised in brown garlic oil, is a favorite with customers. Healthy tsuke soba (dipping noodles) are available only here. Many people from other prefectures visit this soba shop.
Shinjo Higashiyama pottery
Started in 1841, the main pottery in the Shinjo domain is still popular.
The featured glaze is a bluish color called “Snow shades of Dewa”
Higashiyama pottery has its own simple charm and inner beauty. Pottery making classes are offered.
Akakuraonsen Yunoharasou Inn
Akakura’s abundant hot water comes directly from a hot spring source. Dishes made with fresh seasonal local ingredients are highly recommended. Somehow a retro atmosphere and traditional children’s songs will make you feel comfortable. Have a relaxing bath time in a private open-air rotenburo equipped with tatami rest space while listening to the sounds of nature by the Oguni river.
